Emma! A Pop Musical
King Street Theatre at Fort McMurray Composite High School invites you to the Western Canadian debut of Emma! A Pop Musical by Eric Price. Starring talented Composite High students, the show opens on December 3, 2015 at 6 p.m., and runs until December 5.
Adapted from the classic novel of the same name by Jane Austen, Emma! retells the story featuring hit songs from legendary girl groups, and iconic female singers. Think Shania Twain, Paula Abdul, Katy Perry, and more. The play, consisting of about 20 students including crew, focuses on the story of Emma Woodhouse, a senior at Highbury Prep. Emma is seriously determined to find a boyfriend for her painfully shy friend, Harriet. And, she’s on a deadline – Emma needs to find a match by the end of the school year. What ensues next is a treat for the audience.
Rehearsals started two weeks after school began in September. Brittany Loder, Drama Teacher at Composite High School is directing the play.
“I picked the play, because I wanted something that would be fun. Last year we did an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. The music in Emma! is from the 1960s to now. The plot stays true to the novel, but with modern twists,” explains Loder, who has been with the school for four years.
Virginia Poole, a grade 10 student at Composite High School is playing Emma. She says the experience has been exciting for her.
“I’ve never been the lead before, so it’s kind of scary. There’s a lot to learn. And, I have about 95 minutes of material I need to remember. But, it’s so much fun. I like her character; I can relate to Emma. I’m a bubbly and outgoing person too.”
Kevin Bergen, Principal, Composite High School, is looking forward to opening night.
“This is a great opportunity for our students to showcase their talents and pursue their passion at the same time. Performing Arts are a conduit for student expression, risk-taking and personal growth. We hope our community will support these students by attending a performance and commending them on their efforts.”
All shows open at 6 p.m. Tickets are on sale now, and only $10, available from the Composite High School main office located on 9803 King Street. Seating is limited.
